Project Duration: 1998-2001

Nature and Target Group:

The population growth, the environmental degradation and health problems are some of the serious threat to Nepali people. The nature of the project is to improve the quality of life of Nepali people by improving the environment in which families live. The target groups of this project were the poor and disadvantaged communities on the banks of the Rapti and Narayani rivers.

Achievements:

Fri PAD supported these communities to complete the Environmental Quiz Context. The project also successfully planted more than 300 thousand Mulberry saplings and 10,000 Sissoo saplings, which in turn helped protect communities from serious landslides and erosion. Another benefit of the planting was the increase in the community income by increasing land productivity in six VDCs of Chitwan and 14 in VDCs in districts like Kavre, Tanahun, Makwanpur and Dhading.

Donors and Funding:

FRI PAD mobilized local resources along with funds from DANIDA and HMG/N. A total of USD $16,428.65 had been invested for protecting the environment and population control.

Role of Fri PAD in Implementation:

Fri PAD selected the sites and provided good quality saplings for planting. Focusing on the degradation of the environment, population control, the environmental quiz context and plantation Programs for disadvantaged people were introduced. Fri PAD also provided awareness training for indigenous communities.

Partnerships:

Fri PAD and Local User’s Committee.

Community Involvement and Sustainability:

The community was well organized and pooled their resources together so that they could provide local materials for this Program. Since they are more organized they are better able to work locally and are registered in a District Administration Office. This ability allows them to meet future challenges easily.
